June 2: From China to Chicago: A Mother/Daughter Journey

Jian Ping came to the Museum Saturday, June 2, 2012 for a discussion and book signing of Mulberry Child: A Memoir of China and Immigrant Acculturation.

This compelling talk focused on the immigrant journey of author Jian Ping and her experience raising a free-spirited American girl in the U.S. It explored the cultural and generational differences between mother and daughter and the steps they are taking to build their communication and understanding.

Jian Ping grew up during the Cultural Revolution in China, living through the traumatic chaos, hardship and deprivation of the '60s and '70s. After living in America for 20 years, Jian Ping wrote her memoir Mulberry Child in an attempt to connect with her daughter, Lisa. The book has been developed into a feature-length documentary film by Susan Morgon Cooper and narrated by Jacqueline Bisset.
